As people begin their recovery journey, far too many do not have access to affordable, ethically managed and accountable sober living homes. The NSLA assists in providing the highest quality and most effective sober living homes, as well as promotes the establishment, successful management and growth of high quality 12 Step, abstinence-based sober living homes. It was this support that made me want to ensure that when I started my quit alcohol programme to help others, that I also had a support community set up and available for both my private members and also the wider community. Based on the national standard, NARR developed a certification program that it licenses to its affiliates. In turn, affiliate organizations are responsible for certifying recovery residences that meet the national standard.

Our mission is to support persons in recovery from addiction by improving their access to quality recovery residences through standards, support services, placement, education, research and advocacy. In 2011, NARR made history by establishing a national standard for recovery residences. Guidance for the standard was also received from recovery residence providers (some with decades of experience) from across the nation representing all four levels of support and nationally recognized recovery support stakeholders. Every day, women and men who are suffering from alcoholism and addiction find recovery, support and safe housing in NSLA member’s top quality sober living homes. Research has shown that sober living homes are among the most effective and affordable resources in promoting life-long recovery from alcoholism and addiction. These studies suggest that sober living should play a prominent role in publicly supported efforts to combat the social toll of alcoholism and drug addiction.

The standard provides a road map for developing the full spectrum of recovery housing to better match needs and a blue print for housing providers to rise to the occasion. NARR released the second version of the standard in October 2015, and in 2018 released Version 3.0, our current version. I have put together a review of what I feel are the best sober groups which includes online communities and Facebook support groups that you should get yourself involved in right now. The National Sober Living Association gives owners/managers of sober living homes opportunities to network, gain nationwide exposure and participate in mentorships, training and the annual NSLA conferences. The NSLA also assists and promotes the establishment, successful management and growth of high-quality sober living homes. As a UK based support community, Club Soda have the completely free of charge Facebook support group ‘Club Soda Together’ set up and it has a staggering 14k+ members.
